Heartburn (acid reflux)

Indigestion and Heartburn are different although there are some similarities, and thus some confusion. Indigestion is a general term for discomfort in the upper tummy area, while heartburn is more of a burning feeling in the chest caused by stomach acid.

Heartburn Symptoms include…

  • Burning sensation in the chest (worse after eating, lying down, or bending over).
  • Bitter or sour taste in the mouth.
  • Feeling full, bloated, or nauseous.

Self-Care Tips:

  • Eat smaller meals and avoid eating late at night.
  • Avoid trigger foods like spicy, fatty, or acidic foods, caffeine, alcohol, and fizzy drinks.
  • Stay upright after eating (avoid lying down for at least 3 hours).
  • Raise the head of your bed slightly to prevent acid reflux at night.
  • Maintain a healthy weight and avoid tight clothing around the stomach.
  • Quit smoking if applicable.

Pharmacy Treatment Options:

  • Over-the-counter antacids (e.g., Gaviscon) to neutralize stomach acid.
  • Acid-suppressing medications (PPIs like omeprazole or H2 blockers like ranitidine) if symptoms persist.

When to See a Doctor:

  • Frequent heartburn (more than twice a week).
  • Symptoms not improving with self-care.
  • Difficulty swallowing, persistent nausea, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss (could indicate a more serious issue).
